| October's Hill (A few notes)
October is a time of harvest, of apples and cheese, pumpkins and wood smoke. October is the birth month of the author Thomas Wolfe. It is a time of color; reds and golds, yellows and brilliant oranges.
The arrival of the month signals the winding down of another year when memories fly into your heart and you ask: Who am I? and How did I come to travel so far in such a short time. What is it that I know? and How much have I truly learned in my life?
You look at the road that rises before you and you ask: Is there anything that I have done truly important in the great scheme of things? And then, What is beyond this October's Hill?
I look forward to each day's mysteries and possibilities and do believe that having something, anything at all to look forward to in one of the great driving forces of life.
I know that there will be music ahead, just as there has always been music. Just as the beautiful old hymns and the songs of the Carter family have filled my life so far, so shall that life be filled with all the music yet unheard.
There will be the dearest of friends ahead just as there have been the dearest of friends gone by. There will be times of love and tears beyond October's Hill and, as evidenced by each blessed, brightening sky, there shall always be the newest of days.
Many thanks to all the musicians who played on this recording and to all of the folks at Red House Records for their continuing faith. Thanks to Anna Ellendman for her idea for "Dear Friend." Thank you to my family for holding up the light against the darkness when it falls, and as always a great thanks to those who take the time to listen.
