A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange
by Mark S. Tucker

If you dug the hell out of Lucky Peterson's gargantuan magnum opus, Live at the 55 Arts Club, Berlin (here), even half as much as I did, and I dug the unliving bejeezus out of it, then this may or may not make it onto your Must Get list, as it's extracted from that gig…minus the material with wife Tamara Peterson. Thus, I'm of two minds on I'm Back Again, as, if you did indeed nab the earlier 5-disc box, then you already have everything you need and can afford to pass Back Again up. On the other hand, if you didn't pick up that sprawling, brawling, caterwauling monster, and if too much of a good thing is precisely what you hunger for, then you gotta get this one.

STILL, I say get the set, which is available on Amazon at a super low price. You'll be writing and thanking me, trust me on that, when, that is, you can tear yourself away from it, which won't be easy. My main concern is that, when you get to the Pearly Gates after your time on Earth, Gabriel just might be behind St. Peter, and you know what a jazz fan Gabe is. When St. Pete asks "Hey, wait a minute, you didn't get the Peterson box set?" and Gabriel catches wind of that…well, sir, you're gonna have a LOT of 'splainin' to do before you get past the pair and don your wings. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes as those angelic brows furrow and an ominous dirge rears up in the background. I'M JUST SAYIN'!!

Either way, read my 2013 review of the box (linked above) to dig into the backbone of everything here, and, should you go against my advice, I'll drop by the churchy-church on the corner and say a rosary and novena for ya, just in case. It couldn't hurt, and, even as an atheist, I'm that kinda guy.

Track List:

  • I'm Back Again (Peterson / Coleman Jr.)
  • Smooth Sailing (M. Grebb)
