The word 'psychedelic' is an odd one. Literally, it means 'mind bending' and was born in the LSD era, but musicians and critics have seized upon it to describe anything even just a tad out of musical norms (so, um, I guess the Carpenters and Eliza Gilkyson were 'psychedelic' when they were covering Klaatu's Calling Occupants), but the true measure is had in such instances as Pink Floyd's Ummagumma and Amon Duul II's Wolf City. However, psychedelia was also validated in roots musics through Kak, Kaleidoscope, and jam ensembles like the Grateful Dead. Then, of course, there was John Cipollina and Quicksilver Messenger Service, which is quite the appropriate reference when it comes to Kevn Kinney and his Drivin' 'n Cryin' this time around.
In fact, Songs from the Psychedelic Timeclock is a lot like QSM's Happy Trails and Shady Grove blended with classic 60s chart distorto—sitars, la la la's, and synths included—to produce a sound that dwells happily in the country/roots/folk/rock arena while pushing the elements past the barn and into an opiated starry night. Think perhaps of Space Opera as well, then, or a harder-edged Rain Parade—ironically even more so with the Sometimes the Rain Is just the Rain cut, which pushes pretty damned hard on the borderlands of genre conventions. One track is even co-written with The Dictators' and Wild Manitoba's Andy Shernoff, but…heh! it's not the song you're going think it is: In the Sound Room. No, that was penned by Jim Tessier but is as rugged and chunka-chunka as the Dics and Mani woulda pumped out. Cap it all off with an instrumental Yardbirdsy rave-up, The Psychedelic Time Clock, and this third of a four EP cycle stands up very well indeed with the previous pair (see the reviews: here and here).
