Very much not for everyone but also quite unusual, TriPod is a trio Waring Blenderizing free-form, Canterbury, outside, punk, and avant jazz into a form that brings to mind many of the odder bands orbiting the nominally prog reservoir old and new: Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, X-Legged Sally, Granfalloon, and suchlike. On the other hand, the dexterities displayed are rather arresting, as little of the repertoire is relaxing, soothing, or temperate. The least polished aspects lie in the vocals department, and I'm not so sure they're necessary or wanted, as this trio of winds, bass, and drums is actually a great fragmented instrumental unit…whether it knows it or not.
Of all people, Genya Ravan not only discovered these cats at CBGBs in NYC (and they've since been touring festivals across the Atlantic and elsewhere) but also produced their debut release. The too often idiotic Wikipedia tells us TriPod follows in the tradition of King Crimson and ELP under a symphonic rubric. Sheerest balderdash. However, Pierre Moerlen (Gong) was once a member, and that's a respectable historical note, to be sure. Nathless, don't listen to TriPod while eating dinner, building intricate balsa-model airplanes, or trying to get to third base with your significant bedroom other, as you'll fuck up whatever it is you were going for. Way too many quirks, kinks, and abrupt in-your-faces everywhere for that, although, in a somewhat tempered vein, No Diamond Cries and a couple other songs have a Phil Manzanera-ish rock song format to them. Perhaps the best advice is to recommend TriPod for those days when the Prozac and Zanax just aren't working and you've decided to go along with the schizophrenic flow. Who knows? You might even decide pharmaceuticals are the crap they really are and go for art therapy instead. Chalk one up for loons like these cats and their craftily palsied hands.
