When you're singled out to open for Godsmack in a 17,000 seat arena, you've pretty much hit the final gate for legitimacy. Resin puts out a hard-driving metal sound that matrixes Ron Dallaire's vocals atop a trio of instrumentalists ably led by Patrick Pachero and his urgent guitar sculpting chunks of asphalt and fire from the clouds, at times double-synched for an airier tone. There's a bit of Alice in Chains to these guys as well, especially in the crafting of clear melodies and movements—unlike the thrashsters, who have to be accessed with a chainsaw by the listener. Pachero's leads are infrequent but tasty, uncomplicated, more concerned with complementing the forward motion of each tune.
Tomorrow subtly builds up its layers to obtain an exaltative feeling while For a Reason contrasts the heavy with balladic laybacks, Dallaire's vocals centering everything, pulling the distortion factor to swirl about him. Dave O'Brien (bass) and Steve Smith (what? another drummer named Steve Smith??) keep the rhythm section nailed down. Though Resin's sound is not at all like Rammstein's, their songs are constructed along similar lines, with well chosen structures that keep things simple but engaging.
Though they're not a part of the sludgy up-from-the-depths-of-hell movement, neither is the group a pyrotechnic unit like Deep Purple nor an aggregate of medievalists like Candlemass or Amon Amarth. They cleave to an uncomplicated but sirenic mode, impossible to ignore, and it's not difficult to see why they got the nod from Godsmack or Taproot…or even Ratt, whom they've also opened for, and must have pissed off or set to jealousy, 'cause, frankly, I'd listen to these cats all night long and send Ratt packing.
