The Thomas Brotherz are a blues duo from the San Diego area made up of Michael McFadden on vocals 6-string guitar and harp and Paul Damico on vocals, harp, 12-string guitar, bottleneck and banjo.

Their self-titled release is an inconsistent collection of original material written by Damico and recorded raw in their own studio. The writing, performing and recording are all inconsistent but there are a few selections where everything comes together pretty well.

Give It A Try is definitely a song where everything comes together for these guys. The inclusion of banjo on this track, the vocal style and arrangement, production, lyrics, everything is reminiscent of Backwards Sam Firk and Delta X with vocals would fit in the hokum jugband tradition perfectly! An excellent tune and maybe the best on the CD.

One consistent element in this collection is that the more light-hearted and humorous compositions work best every time. This is where Damico shines as a songwriter. He has real strength in this area and I hope he pursues it.
