This is Janiva's first release on Alligator Records and it is an artistic display of her fantastic vocal powers and deep soulful voice. She co-produced this disc with David Darling and the material picked to display her vocal prowess is stunning, at times unusual, but with great backing and musicians behind her she pulls it off and displays that it is her vocal agility that gives her complete command of the material. Whether the material be blues, soul or R & B she is the master at interpreting this varied material, by such as Tina Turner, Little Milton, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and Candi Staton to name but a few of the people she has chosen. This is a woman, a singer, who has been through it all, she has been fire tested and come out the back end but the better for having been tested. She is using what she has learned and putting it to good use benefit of others. A survivor and she uses all of these experiences she has lived first hand and infused the pain and joy into her voice to bring the emotion she feels for the song out into the open and makes the song her own. This is a powerhouse disc that finally displays the vocal energy that has only been hinted at to this point in previous recordings. The magnificent power and emotionality of her vocal prowess is on full display here aided by the crack assistance from the supporting musicians. Thank you Janiva for blossoming and thank you Alligator for helping her display this power.
