Storyhill is an acoustic/pop duo originating in Bozeman, Montana. Chris Cunningham and John Hermanson grew up singing and playing music together, and creating beautiful vocal harmonies. Over the years they have developed a loyal fan base in Montana, Minnesota and across the country. And it's easy to see why: their vocals fit together like hand in glove with harmonies reminiscent of the young Simon and Garfunkel.
The self-titled CD opens with one of the recording's best cuts, Give Up the Ghost. It's a tender love song urging the lover to give in to love. And it's so easy to give in to the melody, the soaring harmonies and the delicate finger picking on guitar. It begins this way, with beautifully written lyrics:
These guys excel at writing, singing and performing acoustic pop ballads. Highlight is another jewel of a song celebrating the transporting, liberating power of love - of finding the perfect partner for a lifetime. The kind of sound that Storyhill has perfected over years of working together can open a sunny window on even the most overcast day. This song brings to mind some of Dan Fogelberg's early, classic tunes. It's that good.
There are great upbeat, pop radio friendly tunes here as well. Love Will Find You will have you up dancing and moving to the beat. And it's got all of the Storyhill hallmarks: skilled musicianship, uplifting harmonies and catchy lyrics. Can you tell that I love this song? Sacramento is another wonderful pop song with some rock-inspired percussion and electric guitar.
Some songs are so beautiful that they give you chills just listening to them. Fallen is one of these. It's about a man confessing his love for a woman, tentatively, carefully, but surely and completely. And then there are those gorgeous melodies....
There's a lot to like and many things to love in the music of Storyhill. I like their harmonies so much that I'd take them with me on that proverbial desert island list. I think I could survive just fine listening to their voices rise and fall above the ocean waves. This is a beauty of a recording.
