I have a sneaking suspicion that Ben Swift's guitar driven roots rock is much more compelling live than it sound's on Pull, his debut CD.
For despite his emphatic and textural command of many a stringed instrument, this fourteen song collection sounds a tad bit too controlled: each note falling perfectly where you would suspect it belongs, and the songs mostly all built around the standard 4/4 frame. Swift's effective, parched prairie voice also strains under the studio lights, begging for the stage. Songs rising above criticism: Puppet Baby; the Knopfler-ish Burn The Mist Away and New York Rain.
