David Rovics 2003 release, Return, is an impressive collection of songs, well-produced and a great introduction to the music of this talented songwriter. Many of his songs speak of political issues and the struggle for peace and stability in the Middle East. It's not enough to say that Rovics writes protest songs. His music also seeks to inspire us to stand up against injustice and oppression in our own lives.

In the song Strike A Blow Against The Empire it states: What were you doing in those fateful times. Did you raise your voice against these awful crimes. Were you hiding in your bedroom when the situation was so dire — or did you strike a blow against the Empire?

The opening track After The Revolution is a fun and upbeat tune that shares some thoughts on how life would be different in a truly peaceful world. It's a utopian kind of dream but it does get you thinking about the possibilities for a future world.

There are also songs that acknowledge and honor heroic individuals. The Death Of Rachel Corrie is the story of a brave woman who sat down in front of a bulldozer in the Gaza strip to protect someone's home and was run over. David tells these stories with compassion and frankness. Long after the newspaper headlines fade - these stories will live on in this collection of songs.

Rovics teams up with producer Sean Staples who plays on many of the tracks, invites additional musicians to add their talents, and gets credit for the arrangements. The result is a great sound - showcasing the gifted songwriting of David Rovics. I highly recommend this CD. It will be especially welcome to all those whose politics lean toward the left. Music is a powerful vehicle for inspiring people and David Rovics knows this. He writes these songs because of a need to express the humanity that he feels.

The independent label "Ever Reviled Records" helped to get this recording made and should be applauded for their efforts. They state that they are committed to being a creative force for social revolution and bringing music like David Rovics to the public at large. Rovics "Return" is a great CD and a welcome addition to my music library.
