A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange
by Moshe Benarroch

This is a compilation of songs about loss. The back cover says that the word "Loss" is not enough. It isn't, but there is an old and almost never used word in the English language, invented by the 17th century philosopher Wiltkins, that fits the idea of this CD. The word is "Neverness;" the idea of someone that disappears and we will never see again.

This 4 CD set includes 51 songs and also all the lyrics by some of the best songwriters living today, and some who left us early in their life. I will not quote any names since the overall quality of this set is so high I would have to recommend the whole list. The music is acoustic and mostly folk, with some country-folk, some country and also a few instrumentals.

I think that the whole concept should be a very successful one, since many songwriters have dealt and deal in their songs with people who have left us. More often than not, as this compilations shows, they write their best songs when dealing with a lover, a husband, or a father who has died.

And this is also a useful compilation, since what we need most when someone leaves us is music to make us reminisce and remember. We need words to comfort us and to give some sense of the mystery of the one that has gone, the last words that we never had the time to say.

Add to this that this compilation is a great introduction to what is happening in the singer-songwriter world and the folk world these days. This is highly recommended. I can't recommended a compilation more highly than this one! There are Real Audio and MP3 samples of each song posted at
