A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange
by Allen Price
Most of Doyle Lawson's recent work with Quicksilver has been in the gospel arena. And fine work it is. He continues to record with J.D. Crowe and the Bluegrass Album Band from time to time. His work with the Country Gentlemen is legendary. But it's been awhile since I've heard Doyle strike out on his own with a straight-ahead bluegrass album.
As you might suspect, Doyle hasn't missed a beat. Never Walk Away is a great mix of the spine-tingling harmonies that are a trademark of his gospel recordings and instrumental musicianship worthy of accompanying such fine vocal work. Lawson can play his mandolin rough or sweet, depending on the tune, and make it ring out with a voice of his own. Banjo player Barry Abernathy (featured in the January 1998 Banjo Newsletter) provides solid timing on backup and impressive solos, particularly on the opening to In The Gravel Yard, my personal favorite on this album.
Country music fans will enjoy this album. Pulling in a number of classic country tunes and giving them the bluegrass sound, Never Walk Away moves between slow ballads and the up-tempo pace that gives bluegrass music that special feel. Buck Owens, Glen Campbell, Jeannie Seely, Harlan Howard, Carl Jackson and Whispering Bill Anderson are among the authors of songs on Never Walk Away.
But make no mistake--Never Walk Away is solid bluegrass from one of the tradition's great players. Keep 'em coming, Doyle.
